People with disabilities overcome a lot of obstacles. I admire them. Having grown up with people with disabilities gave me a little insight into their struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I truly respect all people and expect to get that same respect in return. When I get a whiff of disrespect, my respect for such a person begins to wane. Nothing in the section is meant to be disrespectful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-0535326\" data-block-id=\"0535326\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Define &#8220;disabilities&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDisability\u201d is a legal term. Do people really have \u201cdisabilities?\u201d \u201cDisabilities\u201d is a term that implies (to me) that someone is less than other people, maybe even inhuman. I disagree! The government throwing money at \u201cdisabilities\u201d does not guarantee good treatment of the \u201cdisabled.\u201d It does guarantee that someone will make money off of a person&#8217;s \u201cdisability.\u201d That&#8217;s OK if the person with the \u201cdisability\u201d gets some benefit. This is not always the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-6ba1348\" data-block-id=\"6ba1348\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Laws<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>At one time, a disability meant institutionalization. The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_Rights_of_Institutionalized_Persons_Act\" target=\"_blank\">Civil Rights of Institutionalized Persons Act<\/a> did not become a federal law until 1980. \u201cSuch institutions include state and locally operated jails and prisons, juvenile correctional facilities, public nursing homes, mental health facilities and institutions for individuals with intellectual disabilities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/adata.org\/learn-about-ada\" target=\"_blank\">Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)<\/a> did not become law until 1990. The people I knew had obvious difficulties long before either of these laws existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-608dc55\" data-block-id=\"608dc55\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">People with \u201cDisabilities\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Disabled people can be different than the average person. But isn&#8217;t everybody different than everybody else? Wouldn&#8217;t it be awful if everybody was just alike?  Sometimes I inquire about a diagnosis, but not for the purpose of looking down my nose at someone. Let me give you examples of some of the different people I have known.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-f5a2337\" data-block-id=\"f5a2337\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sandy<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandy was blind. He did not become blind until he was in high school. And he refused to let his blindness limit him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is blindness a \u201cdisability\u201d when every other sense compensates by being better than the average person&#8217;s senses? He could hear you close to him by recognizing your footsteps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And he also played the guitar. He knew how to get around in a room, as long as you didn&#8217;t rearrange the furniture. If you did rearrange the furniture, he probably could still get around. I saw him jump off a swimming pool diving board without any help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He learned to use the label of \u201cdisabled\u201d to his advantage. But I never considered him \u201cless than\u201d anyone. He learned to adapt to his situations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He passed away when the tumors that took his sight also took his life. Never had the words of \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d meant so much to me as at his funeral &#8211; \u201cI was blind, but now I see.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-aac6e57\" data-block-id=\"aac6e57\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Blindness is just another way of seeing | Lotfi Merabet | TEDxCambridge\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B-xI3YxAPW4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-spacer stk-block-spacer stk--no-padding stk-block stk-7aa3afa\" data-block-id=\"7aa3afa\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Experience of the Parents of a Child in the 1940s or 1950s (a quote)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;I had suddenly been demoted from the role of a professional to that of the parent as patient; the assumption by some professionals that parents of a retarded child are emotionally maladjusted and are prime candidates for counseling, psychotherapy, or tranquilizers.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>My attempts to point out the many indications of developmental delays and neurological disturbances were categorically dismissed as manifestations of my emotional problems. I was witnessing another captivating professional reaction: the &#8216;deaf ear syndrome&#8217;; the attitude on the part of some professionals that parents are complete ignoramuses so that any conclusion they reach regarding their own child is categorically ignored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later I found that suggestions I would make regarding my own child would be totally dismissed by some professionals, while the same suggestions made by a professional about other children would be cherished by my colleagues as professional pearls of wisdom.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Later I found that suggestions I would make regarding my own child would be totally dismissed by some professionals, while the same suggestions made by a professional about other children would be cherished by my colleagues as professional pearls of wisdo.<\/p>\n<cite>The Minnesota Governor&#8217;s Council on Developmental Disabilities. &#8220;Parallels In TimeA History of Developmental Disabilities.&#8221; Parallels In Time | A History of Developmental Disabilities | Part One. Persons with mild mental retardation were categorized as &#8220;educable&#8221; and had the opportunity to learn basic academic subjects and develop social skills. She was such a delight! She was always proud to show off her achievements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I only saw her upset once. It seemed that someone at work mistreated her or looked down on her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Phyllis passed away in her fifties, but doctors did not expect her to live that long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I am proud to say that both of these people were my first cousins. Both of their families took wonderful care of them. I cannot imagine what their parents or siblings went through in the process of taking care of them.
